Indonesia has no shortage of islands worth visiting, and the choice between Nusa Lembongan, Lombok and the Gili Islands comes up constantly for travellers planning a trip around Bali. They're all beautiful, they're all different, and the right answer depends entirely on what you're actually looking for.

Nusa Lembongan — the easy island

Lembongan sits 30 minutes from Sanur by fast boat, which makes it the most accessible of the three. It's small, quiet and easy to navigate — you can cover the whole island on a scooter in under an hour. The diving and snorkeling are genuinely world-class, particularly for manta rays and sea turtles. It has enough cafés, beach clubs and surf spots to feel alive without ever feeling overwhelming. If you want to decompress after Bali without straying too far, Lembongan is the natural choice.

The Gili Islands — the party option

The three Gili Islands off the northwest coast of Lombok each have a distinct personality. Gili Trawangan is the most famous and the most social — it has a well-established backpacker and party scene, no motorised vehicles and a strip of bars that run late into the night. Gili Meno is the quietest and most romantic of the three, popular with honeymooners. Gili Air sits somewhere in between. The snorkeling around the Gilis is good, particularly for turtles, but the reefs have suffered more from bleaching than those around Lembongan.

Getting to the Gilis from Bali takes longer — a fast boat from Padang Bai runs around two to three hours depending on conditions.

Lombok — the wild card

Lombok is a full island rather than a small outcrop, which means it offers a completely different scale of experience. Mount Rinjani, one of Indonesia's most impressive volcanoes, draws serious trekkers. The south coast has some of the best surf in the region and beaches that feel genuinely untouched. Kuta Lombok, not to be confused with Kuta Bali, has grown quickly but still feels far rawer than anything on the Bali tourist trail.

The tradeoff is that Lombok requires more planning, more travel time and more comfort with uncertainty. Infrastructure is improving but it's not Bali. If adventure is the point, that's a feature. If you want things to work smoothly, it's worth factoring in.

So which one is right for you?

For a short island escape from Bali with guaranteed good weather, great underwater life and no logistical stress, Nusa Lembongan wins comfortably. For those chasing nightlife and a social scene, Gili Trawangan makes more sense. For an off-the-beaten-track adventure with serious hiking, Lombok earns its place.
